How to memorise the chart without learning it by heart

Nobody memorises four hundred cells. What sticks is a handful of decision families, and the rest follows:

17 and above: always stand. No exception in basic strategy.
From 12 to 16, it depends on the dealer. Showing 2 to 6 he is in trouble: stand. Showing 7 or more: hit.
11: always double. It is the most profitable hand in the game.
Always split aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s.
Soft hands, with an ace, are played more aggressively: you cannot bust by hitting.
